Basketball may be the newest out of all professional sports in North America. This exhilarating game started in 1946 the year the National Basketball Association was created. It now contains some of the most well-known athletes of all time. The NBA was initially known as the Basketball Association of America. This association was started by owners of various hockey arenas based in the Northeast and Midwest portions of the U.S. in addition to ones located in Canada. The actual leagues' first game was played on November 1, 1946 and was made up of the New York Knickerbockers vs. the Toronto Huskies. A blending in 1949 joined together the Basketball Association of America with the National Basketball League to make the NBA. With its initial start, the NBA contained seventeen teams. This number was reduced in 1953 to eight caused by budgetary concerns. All original eight teams are still existent today.

A brief history from the NBA Championship starts out in the year 1947. This is the time when the very first championship game was held. Ever since then, the event has taken place every year. In 1986, it was named the NBA World Championship Series. This particular championship is played each June to conclude the season. The winners from the Eastern and Western Conference Finals play each other for that championship title. The best-of-seven playoff match between teams is used to determine who will play. Whichever team has the best in season record gets home court advantage for the first 2 games. Home court playing for the middle three games depends upon who won the previous game. Then the final two are played at the team with the best home record without regard to who's ahead.

Through the years there have been many dynasties in the history of the NBA Championship including the Lakers and Celtics dynasties of the early championship years. The Minneapolis Lakers were the first team to have a basketball championship dynasty. This significant streak survived for approximately a decade and boasted five championship wins over a six year time period. The Celtics followed suit and ruled the finals for thirteen straight seasons. Then in the 1970's these dynasties died off. Eight total teams won the championship during this period. The rivalries initiated once more in the eighties and included both original teams. Over that time, the Lakers and Celtics battled for the NBA Championship title against other teams or each other in each and every championship game from 1980 to 1990. By far the most well-known dynasty started in the early nineties. Chicago Bulls players completely dominated the league making this dynasty probably the most substantial one within the history of the NBA Championship.

Current day championships are mainly played by the Lakers and Spurs. These teams have won eleven out of twelve Western Conference titles and a total of 9 NBA championships. Major players including Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal have highlighted these games using their amazing skills and athletic talent. History possesses a way of repeating itself and dynasties are typical in the game of basketball. It'll be interesting to see what new organizations take over the sport in the many years to come.
